Hair Product Mystery Revealed

Oh what a tease!

I am finally going to talk about said product which I thought might result in massive growth but which in the end merely strengthened the hair that was already there.

And that's the crux of my review. This product has instilled a very healthy habit in me because of the way you apply it but at the end of the day it has not accelerated growth in the way that a few online reviews promised. But that's okay. It doesn't promise it on the packaging so I don't feel mislead. This was an experiment to see if it worked and I walk away with strong healthy, hair.

The product is by Phyto - a brand I now adore - and is called the Intensive Restorative Hair Treatment: Phytoaxil.

I believe this is generally marketed at those who are experiencing thinning hair - and blokes at that. The idea behind it is that you spray the product close to your roots and massage it into your scalp. You do this four times a week for the first month and then twice a week for the following two months. They recommend you repeat this "treatment" twice a year.

I got this in Boots and paid about £25-30 for it. The bottle is a mere 50ml but it did last. I usually used about 8-10 sprays each time and then massaged it in for about 2 minutes. You will immediately notice two things:

1) The nice herbal scent that leaves a pleasant fragrance behind on your pillows; and
2) Your hair will be immediately volumised and noticeably softer.

Would I recommend it?

Yes and no....Phyto are, I am realising a fantastic brand, and I am grateful for buying this product for getting me massaging...

And here is the trick - scalp massages really are the best thing you can do for your hair and although I think my hair grew at a very normal, natural rate for me, it has grown healthy and happy.

This product may not be the miracle cure that I wanted it to be but it has instilled a great routine. I am now conscious of massaging my scalp for at least a minute or two a day - normally pre-styling. Sometimes I forget and I am to be found in jim-jams walking around manically giving self-massage :) Oo err!

Really you don't need a product to do this either. I noticed recently that there was a shampoo range called FAST which talks about massaging in the product to ensure it is "activated". What a load of marketing rubbish - its the scalp massage that will stimulate your scalp and keep everything that grows out of it strong and long.

At the point I apologise. This isn't a very sexy conclusion is it? I don't have a specific product recommendation that you can all go out and buy for guaranteed long locks - heck if I did I would have stockpiled said product. All I can say is that I have learned to focus not just on the ragged ends but also the opposite end of the strands. Love your scalp and it will love you :)

This is a really interesting post... especially as I have experienced hair loss after giving birth to my son last summer. Nearly 6 months of it coming out in great handfuls and it never occured to me try scalp massage. I think I need to get serious about looking after my scalp!

scalp massage does not promote hair growth..it only stimulates circulation. the only thing that works is womens rogain and once you stop using it..you loose all the new hair growth. a lot of the reasons for hair loss is stress and vitamin deficiency..so stop stressin girls and start taking prenatal vitamins!

Laura, have you tried coconut oil? Since you're in Dubai, try to get your hands on Dabur's Enriched Coconut Oil. If you massage that into your scalp, it can accelerate hair growth. You can also try an Indian treatment called Shikakai shampoo, but mind you it can be extremely messy!

@Ashley - I have also been trying out a Phyto shampoo which is AMAZING. Going to do a product rave video. I was losing a bit of hair and this has helped 100%.

@loveaudrey - thanks! i have always focused on my hair and never bother with the scalp. i guess we need to give it all attention :)

@CosmoFreakaLeak - promoted circulation is a great thing for hair. I am with you on the stop stressing - a terrible thing for hair.

@Ashwini - thanks for the recommendations!

I've been so curious to find out what you'd been using - so happy to finally know!

I'm actually researching hair products right now - I've decided that this year I'm going to focus on getting thicker hair. I already take some supplements and add some products topically (mostly natural products). I'm going to switch it up - hope I get good results!

Did you notice a difference with hair loss when using this product? Or any other products for that matter?

I love Phyto. For girls with thick hair, and LOTS of it (like myself) their hair relaxing balm is a great product. It totally does relax the roots and does not make the hair huge.

The youtuber "youtips4U" (not sure about spelling) has some hair growth tips. She recommends massaging with jojoba oil, as it is also found in many growth stimulating products. I think coconut oil, although I love this oil, is a bit too heavy for the scalp. At room temperature it's a solid and would need to be heated up (life is too short for that).

Despite what you said, healthy and happy hair is tempting enough (even without the growth) but mustn't purchase! ;-) Need to save money for the shampoo you are going to rave about. Vex in the City posted recently about a product she is going to try for hair growth. I think it was in the same price range and scalp focused.

I had terrible thinning in the middle of last year after an operation.

I started taking lots of vitamins (zinc, biotin and calcium) which helped the loss somewhat.

I then started using Nioxin. THAT stuff is amazing. Within a week of starting with it, the loss reduced to only a few strands. I buy it in bulk so I never run out!

Have you heard of Ovation cell therapy hair products?

Or Eqyss Megatek Rebuilder - it's marketed for Horses - but it's supposed to promote hair growth.... it's apparently made by the same people who make Ovation - but it's significantly cheaper....

This entry was so well written, Laura! You should do this professionally. :) I'll look into more of the massaging part -- I think that's the key. Thanks for the update!

I started massaging my scalp a few months back; totally works! I saw an interview with Christopher Walken where he was asked how he kept such a full head of hair. He said : massage.

If it works for him...!

I think it's interesting that people noticed that the product did more than the package claimed. It seems that the company would be jumping at the opportunity to claim thei product would make hair grow faster. I would be interested to see the results that this prodcut gave me because I have extremely fine, brittle hair. Thanks for the review!

That sounds like a good preventative treatment!
And agreed, we should definitely think of the scalp and the new hair, as well as the already grown part!

I would recomend you try Ookisa. It's a Japanese brand that you may have seen advertised on the AOL.com site.

I haven't been given Bridgette Bardot hair (but my hair is smoother/shiner then before)and I really enjoy the scent. The only drawback is you have the use the product everyday.
