January 1st - Dye hair day!

I have no idea why I have decided to take the leap and dye my hair for the first proper time in months on January 1st but it seemed somewhat meaningful. I think it's because I like to start each year fresh of mind and style and so this goes someway to enable that.

Well, as meaningful and deep as hair is :)

I was inspired to pick up these two boxes by a blogger I discovered recently who has the most gorgeous hair colour. Patukiii's hair is naturally darkest brown/black yet she uses a L'oreal hair dye to turn is a lovely, warm dark blonde. This is about as light I could get without it looking strange with my skintone and it is perfect.

The dye in question is Loreal's 8.1 Ash Blonde.

So I got something I thought might be in in Carrefour (pictured left).

I also picked up another box - Dark Ash Blonde 6.1 - pictured right. Something was calling me towards this: does anyone else often plump for a hair dye based on the look of the model/name?

No?

Okay, its just me :)

Anyway, I am tempted to try this first. Not only does it promise no orange - yeah right - but the swatch on the back specifically refers to dark-black hair and the lift I can expect to get.

I am extremely excited about this. Yes, tragic isn't it? I have received countless compliments this week on my slightly warmer hair so this is a step I am willing to take. And if I don't like it - *shrugs shoulders* - I dye it a gorgeous deep brown colour. So the way I look at it, I win either way :)

Has anyone else tried any of these dyes? Horror stories are more than welcome.

Not sure I understand the Jan 1st story - will you be doing it on Jan 1st then?
Anyway... a shade in the 6 range is definitely darker than the 8 one. My natural hair is a dark mousy blonde and a 6 makes me a brunette (well, a 7 does already do that). So I think if you want to warm up your hair, the 6 is going to be too dark. But it's just my non-professional opinion.

Good luck! I hope works well for you!! Can't wait to see you with lighter hair. I'm going lighter as well early in the new year. I'm patiently waiting for my next hair appointmet and excited to have changed. Happy holidays!

It should work out just fine! The only problem that I had with box dye was that the color was so, well, one-colored. Then again, you've already colored little bits of your hair, so it should give dimension! Good luck! And I would be really excited if I were you too! A change can be totally enlightening (ouch, bad pun on the going blonde)

The first one should work, but it will be brassy. I dye a lot of hair and the problem with the box dyes is that you can't pick EXACTLY what you want. the box says ash, however, you don't know the exact tones(for example purple, or blue that will cancel out all the crappy brass/yellowness). I don't know if you have access, but if you can find the equal to Sally Beauty like in the states, that would be ideall! it's just as cheap and works much better! also have that little conditioner handy. you're hair will get pretty damaged.

I have used the dark ash blonde by loreal, it's actually ultra lightening for darker hair and works well. it's the colour I used to use over and over, i actually have a box handy all the time just in case :), however, on the other hand i just posted about lightening the hair the natural way, i'm thinking of trying it myself so that I dont endure the damage a chemical based dye gives me. Good luck with it, whatever you decide to do. xx

Im too scared to dye my hair. I always use a semi-permin. because I don't know if I will like it and I like my natural color so i like to go back to that without having to try to find a color that looks close to it.

I had always heard that you can't use a box dye to lift color out of hair unless it's your natural color - since you just dyed yours, you might want to double check that the boxes will be able to make your hair lighter. I'd love to lighten mine, but I've been dying it darker for a while now, so I've been told that to go lighter I'd have to bleach it all a couple of times or do lots of highlights all over. I think you'll look great with a bit lighter hair, though!

@laura - i have dyed a few bits but not my whole head. oh well, i am game to try :) haha

I too judge a dye box by its cover and name.

Example: "Starry Night" sounds much cooler than "Natural Black". LOL!

Good luck! :)

umm umm umm, I don't want you to turn your lovely hair orange! I've been orange in the past (my hair's naturally med to dark brown) I've lightened my hair so many times and been blonde but no matter how many at home dyes I've used I've always ended up a dodgy orange colour. I've had my hair fixed a few times by hairdressers and they've made it a golden blonde but it's always faded to a brassy colour. My fear of going orange is probs just because of my experience but it's up to you. If it all worked out I think the colour would look gorgeous on you but, I personally, would advise not to because I've wasted so much money on my ever changing brown to blonde hair. It's a tricky one xxxx

Hmm, because your hair is so dark and has been colored dark several times I'm not sure that drugstore color can lift it. Sometimes that causes the stripe effect. You might want to get the color lifted by a pro first and then color. I did that, and was so thankful. She told me color can't lift other color from the hair, so the roots always end up lighter.

I checked out her pictures, and I think that color would look great on you! I hope you can achieve it! Make sure you post photos when you're done ... and if it doesn't work out, you can always visit the salon to get it fixed! ;)

a) i judge everything cosmetic by its name 2) i too have decided that at somepoint in the near future i will dye my hair blonde. I have been dying my hair since i was 13 and have dyed it black hair for the past year, i think it looks nice--however, the more i watch Jersey Shore the less i want black hair. duh.

ok, i have tried to lift a really dark color from my hair with a lighter box dye a couple of times, one time it worked, but the rest of the times i went out and found a gentle "hair dye stripping" thing--it worked just the same way a box dye does, but it lifted off any previous dye and left my hair ready for any other color.

either way, i wish you lots of luck & i cannot wait to see how it turns out!

How often can you dye your hair? I just dyed mine with Nice and Easy's Perfect 10 in Medium Auburn and it turned out really red and I'm not feeling it. I love the dimensions it gives (you should look them up I think you'd like them) but this isn't good. I know you just dyed your hair recently and if you are doing it again soonish it gives me hope I don't have to live forever with this disaster.

I've had similar experiences to Maddielalala, I'd dyed my hair lighter using box dyes and the roots where it was my natural colour went light blonde and the rest which had been dyed darker just went orange, even after several boxes, completely wrecked my hair. Definately do a patch test before you use it! The colour is lovely though xxx

i use the 8.1 ash blond and i'm chinese so my hair is practically black but i love the colour it turns out! it's more like a light ash brown when put in my hair!

I tried the left one already (light ash brown). Must say it is a very nice colour even though it didnt show up so well on my hair as I had a dark red dye before.. And yes, the model is VERY attractive xoxo Have fun with ur hair ^^

ive tried the 6.1 dark ash blonde before ! :) Honestly it didnt turn out exactly like what I expected/what was on the box. But its still quite a light brown color which is v pretty and flattering. I highly recommend this color. I have 4 boxes of this in my cupboard! I use 2 boxes everytime because of the length of my hair.

I just bought hair color today. I get my hair professionally colored & it is soooo dull. I colored my moms hair w/revlon Colorsilk, which is also very inexpensive, & her hair is shiny & glossy! I say inexpensive because I need 2 boxes for this hair of mine. Love your new color, but I think it will be great. Going dark is always an easy fix.

Can't wait to see!

I know have a dark blonde colour to my hair, but when I was blonde and working in Korea, I decided to import blonde hair dye and do it myself. AWFUL, I chose a light as blonde hair colour (I had bleached hair pretty much), but after that hair colour, my hair turned STEEL GRAY!! IT was HORRIBLE. Because hair stylist there didn't have blonde hair dyes, I had to use lemon and conditioner to get the colour out. That took ages and left my hair in horrible condition. Hence why i'm now dark blonde and had to chop a huge part of my hair off. Apparently it's the ash in the hair dye that did that...anyways, nightmare! I don't think an ash dye on dark hair will cause any problems! Good luck :)

I used the dark ash blonde not so long ago wanting to achieve the luminous brunette look but it was an instant fail. My hair does not lift in responce to colourings.. Only heavy duty bleaching and that is NOT a good look. Iv unfortunatly had to face the facts I will never be a glamouress golden brunette :(

I'm on this quest myself - getting my dark brown/blackish hair lighter.. So far I have bleached my entire hair three times last week, to a medium brown color. Tomorrow I'm going to put highlights to it.. so this will be interesting.
Good luck with your hair project! ;)

You are all lucky that these home dyes work for you! I am a deep brunette & have never had any luck doing it myself.

Louis Licari has always come to the rescue.

P.S. I think the shade you have now is perfect.

I wish I'd read this before I went to Superdrug, I'm so tempted to dye my hair now! I hope it turns out like you want it.

I think if you do do this you should use the lighter shade and not the darker one first as tint will not lift tint so you could end up with a stripey effect .I personally would just go full steam ahead with the 8.1 dye , and hopefully it will turn out fine , if not as you say you can go darker ....so I'd leave the darker ash alone and just see how the lighter one turns out , also ash tones neutralise red tones in the hair ....yes I was once a hairdresser , and I would suggest you go to a professional and get it done , but can also see the fun in trying it yourself ....be brave bite the bullet and good luck xxx

I absolutely love L'Oreal hair dye and was actually planning to write up a post on it soon. However, I would recommend the professional salon kind of it rather than what you normally find at the store. My hair is currently wearing the L'Oreal Color Gems Blue Black shade. I'm always excited about dying my hair! It's actually crazy. But I'm never as braves as you, I always stay in the same color range which is blonde. I'm so fair, that if I try to go darker (as I did before) I will look like a dead woman walking ahah Garnier Nutrisse and L'oreal Excellence are my favorite brands by the way ;)

i use live xxl chocolate blonde on my roots to blend them with my blonde hair, and becaus eit as a purple tone, it wont go brassy.
