An early rave: Umberto Giannini Overnight Beauty Moisture Balm

(Disclaimer: Why are people panicking about the FTC? And remember if you spent your own cash on something there is essentially nothing to disclose so we don't need to even address it. Just for fun though I will play along...I buy my own shizz and I paid for this with my own moolaa. No sponsorship and not even a freebie in sight.)

Back when I was a student - note a very long time ago - Umberto Giannini was something akin to a celebrity hairdresser. Well, definitely in the Midlands :)

I was studying at the University of Birmingham and his salon, in the city centre, was frequented by myself on a regular basis when I was in quest of a trim during term time.

The man himself actually died of a rare disease in 2001 but his brand has lived on and one product which recently caught my eye in the aisles of Boots was this.

Called an Overnight Beauty Moisture Balm, it is designed to be applied to dry hair before you call it a night. The result they are promising is hydrating repair and hair glowing with life.

Wow.

Give me some of that - particularly as I have heard about a Kerastase product that works in a similar way. This was about £6 so I figured I would give it a whirl - well, why the hell not?

It's been a couple of weeks since I started using this and here are some lessons learned:

* Apply a TINY amount - we are talking 10p/quarter sized. I have read reviews from people saying that they didn't like it but they also mentioned combing it through your hair. If you have to resort to that then you have applied wayyyy too much. Just have a tiny amount, rub it between your hands and then scrunch it into your hair. I concentrate on the ends. Think of it like a serum and not a deep conditioner.
* If you apply too much not only will you wake up greasy-reasy but it will kind of clump. It seems to attach itself to certain parts of the hair so as I said, play it safe and start tiny to avoid a product-dreadlocks.
* You don't have to cover your head before you hit the pillow. I haven't seen staining on my white pillowcases. Of course if you are layering it on, that might be a different story.
* It doesn't create product build-up - at least in MY hair. Everyone's mop is different though - all I can say is that I haven't noticed increased weight/need to wash/greasy locks.
* It smells nice - a faint sweet perfume.

I use this product every other day and yes I do wake up with softer hair. It's not miraculous nor what I would call glowing with life but it's soft, silky, non-frizzy and.....well, I can't think of anything else.

Result!

However, I think the reason I like it so much though is partly because of the psychological factor. It's sort of comforting to know that even as I sleep my hair is being nourished/coated with silicon to look and feel better.

Heck, it works for me!

Have you tried this or do you know of similar nocturnal products that are worth a whirl?

I first bought Kerastase Noctogenist Serum Nuit (I think that's the name) last January after loving a sample I received. It did make a difference to my hair texture and the best part...has to be the fragrance. Made my hair smell nice.

@mintychocs - i think this leaves it alot softer than the loreal product. but to be fair the loreal one was dealing with far more damaged hair.

@ifoundpablo - i think thats the one! i need to try kerastase properly! :)

Is this the 'secret' Boots product you were talking about a few weeks ago on Twitter?
It sounds amazing - I need something to give my hair some anti-frizz :)

whats this ftc thing :S

I'm not crazy about this stuff, ultimately the silicones lock the moisture OUT of your hair, hello frizzy ends. A teeny slick of coconut oil will do a much better job, your hair can actually absorb (the size of) the molecules in coconut oil, it therefore goes into the hair rather than just coating the outside.

I have heard good things about this product and I might try it next, I tried Lee Stafford's one and didn't like it and am using BC Bonacure Colo Save Colored Ends by Schwarzkopf professional which was also about £6 on a discount website. I like how these things are supposed to work while you are asleep and save time!

Sounds interesting. Let us know about the growth part of the claim. BTW, I love that you call hair "mops" lol

I use the Kerastage Noctogenist Voile Nuit, which is the same as the serum, only it's a spray. That makes it more practical IMO. I must admit I haven't been very consistent at using it, but when I do use it, I wake up to very soft and healthy looking hair. And it smells beautifully too... I'm glad you reminded me of it!

I've been using this non stop since January and it's really really good.

When I leave my hair curly I just apply a tiny bit and I get no frizz when I wake up..When I straighten my hair and put it on, it gives me really soft hair in the morning.

It's a must have product of mine and it's worth it for the price, I've been using mine practically every night since Jan and it's nowhere near finishing!

Frederic Fekkai do one that I bought at one time and really enjoyed using. I think it was the Protein Rx PM Repair Strengthener. Left my hair super soft, silky and just healthier feeling. It really was lovely - now I'm thinking about repurchasing....

You should try something else I found in boots (I live near the UAE, in fact I live Qatar) you should try the Lee Stafford over night protein treatment, you have to wash it off but it leaves your hair amazingly soft. I'm about 99% sure you can find it at boots in Dubai cause I've been there :)

I can not say more...
Do you ever dream don't need to use nothing more then a Shampoo and your hair look amazing?
I never, because I thought that would never be possible to my long demage frizzzzzzzzzy hair.
But that happens now.
One month and my hair is completely diferent.
They have a leave in conditioner that is a dream...

The most amazing overnight hair product I've found is Castor Oil - have been using it overnight on my scalp to increase hair thickness and growth. So far so good - but I definitely have to shampoo before I head outside!

I bought the mini version of the Umberto Giannini cream just to try it out the day before I saw this on your blog! I found it left my hair soft the next day. I would really like to try the Kerastase too though, as I love all things Kerastase. I read the Noctogenist Serum Nuit is much better than the Voile Nuit, as it's thicker and more moisturising.

Just want to tell you that I found you on a fluke one day. I was so depressed about being unemployed and your blog/videos really cheered me up! You are too funny, cute, sweet and quite informative! Keep up the great work girl!

I've been using L'Oreal Elvive Re-Nutrition Night-Serum, as part of my own no-heat hair challenge (how's yours going, by the way?).

Good: it was free (mum gave it to me) and as you said, it makes me feel as if I am doing something for my hair while I sleep.

Bad: The pump action has broken, with 95% of product still in bottle.
