By Terry Eclat De Rose (Tinted moisturizer) review

Tinted moisturizers are so tempting. They sound simple, earnest and when you first apply them, they make your skin look damn good.

In my experience though - with the likes or Laura Mercier, MAC and Kiehl's - when you get past the first few hours you either end up looking barefaced or like a shiny ball. And no that's not a "glow" - its oil!

The love affair is then firmly over and its back to slathering on foundation.

I got this By Terry product in a recent Sephora splurge. I love the By Terry foundation that I have and so felt that this would also be superb - at the price tag (roughly equivalent to $70 US, it bloomin' well should be).

How could you not get seduced by this description though?

"Get the look of naturally perfect, radiant skin with By Terry's highly anticipated tinted moisturiser. Its lightweight hydrating formula makes skin look flawless by evening out its tone and minimising the look of pores, wrinkles and imperfections."

Swoon!

After trying it out for a week I have come to some conclusions:

* This gives NO COVERAGE. And I mean none. It will tint your skin and make it look warmer but it's not going to cover circles or zits/imperfections. It is therefore only for the skin-confident and I am wearing it at the moment, only because my skin is decent and not spotty.
* They say that this can be worn alone or mixed with foundation. I have tried the foundation mixing and I haven't noticed any difference and it actually got overshadowed by a rival product. For example, I tried it with Studio Fix Fluid and I have to say that the Giorgio Armani Fluid Sheer in number 7 outperformed this baby and gave a much prettier glow.
* The packaging is fantastic. The pump helps you conserve product and as this retails for $70 for 40ml, you need to manage every drop.
* It smells faintly of roses but not in an overpowering granny way: it's delicate, light and pretty.

I slapped it on today to show you what it looks like....this is me with only the By Terry Eclat de Rose on...

As you can see, dark circles are still apparent.

And this is me with a bit more slap on, namely:

* NARS Casino bronzer
* NARS Cactus Flower blush
* NARS Kitty eyeliner (lower lashline)
* MAC Teddy eye kohl smeared over top lid
* Maybelline Pulse Perfection mascara
* MAC Angel lipstick
* MAC Pretty Plush lipglass

I think the overall effect is nice and it does make me feel smug that I am not wearing a foundation...

However, I think this is more of a statement about my current skincare routine - ie, that I have good skin thanks to other products - than it is about this item.

So that brings me to the ultimate question: would I recommend it and would I pay for it again?

The answer is probably not.

To be honest I don't see this as a cosmetic product at all. It's a treatment - a moisturiser - and over time it may minimise the pores and even the skintone as it claims to. However, if I am going to invest in a product, and invest alot, it has to be more than just be "nice". It has to wow me. And this just doesn't.

Ooh that sounded harsh, but hey - it's the truth!

Where do you stand when it comes to tinted moisturizers?

i personally dont love them, but thats because i have some major acne scarring on my chin and a tinted moisturiser just wouldnt cut it :P but maybe when i have clearer skin! :D whats your skincare like now because you skin looks beautiful :)

I've used the Body Shop tinted moisturizer loads a couple of years ago and still occasionally.
However, I do have very good skin and no pimpels or anything like that but with age my dark circles have become more apparent and now I prefer a heavier coverage. But I still use the bodyshop one regularly as it gives a wonderful glow. Apart from that I use Chanel mat lumière and By terry lumière velouté which is more glowy with a satin finish (and expensive). It is ok but well...thought it would be better, at least they have my shade, nars is too yellow for me I wanted t try that initially...oi I wrote a lot sorry;(

@xphoebelinax - i wonder if BB creams are the next step up for us then? although having said that I know that I will always prefer foundation :)

@legseleven7 - haha thanks. gotta a love a touch of the 80s on the lower lashline :)

@hase - that's okay :) i am with you. i think i prefer a heavier coverage :)

Tinted moisturiser always seems to be the product that I use if I can't be bothered, it strikes that medium between looking ill and looking made up, I don't usually want to sit in the 'blah' middle of these two, so I tend not to use it often! xxx

So actually, which tinted moisturiser you like the most/would recommend? I like using them. My skin is pretty good so it looks ok on me. At the moment I use Lancome aqua fusion teinte and I have to say I used to like it a lot but now I am a bit bored and want to try something new! Any suggestions?? BTW you look gorgeous! xxx

@joanna - to be honest there is no one that really sticks out in my mind. i would rather wear a light but beautiful foundation like Giorgio Armani's Luminous Silk...gorgeous!

I know it's like a zillion words long but if you have time i'd love for you to read this article called 'The Dark Side of Dubai' and tell me what you think about it as an ex-pat? Just read it this morning and I don't know anyone that lives in Dubai so I thought i'd ask you!

Hope that's okay?

Love the blog!

Ack! Can't I post links in comments? It's on the Independent website, just google "independent dark side dubai".

I remember using a Neutrogena tinted moisturizer back when I was like 13 (10 years ago) and loving it! It gave me bronzed skin..I doubt they make it any more. It was when they had those bottles with the screw caps! So I'm like-minded, Laura, I have yet to find a great tinted moisturizer in this decade!

I'm indifferent also. I went through a phase of using "Nivea Young" tinted moisturiser which was nice and had the added benefit of a bronze tint. I think a better but similar effect can be had with concealer and a bit of bronzer if you have clear skin (my current routine).
Recently though, I read about Whitney Port's makeup routine and I thought the tinted moisturiser mixed with normal moisturiser sounded interesting, and her makeup look is my ideal.

i have been lemming this for the longest time and you might just have killed this lemming. :( i actually prefer BB creams to foundations because somehow i find it gives me a v flawless coverage? (like the Cullens' flawless complexion in Twilight ;) ) i can never achieve flawless coverage with foundation. :(

I haven't had the best luck with tinted moisturizers either, but I do actually like the smashbox one.

Love the colored liner on the lower lashline! It's amazing :)

you really need to have almost perfect skin to live with just tinted moisturiser. Like you say - nice idea in theory but in reality for most of us, it's just not enough :-(

I love Elf's tinted moisturiser - I find it pretty brilliant! :D

Hi Laura,

You looked every pretty in those pictures, and I dont see any dark circles.

I am not a big fan of the tinted moisturizer either, and I always have a question - do you need to put on moisturizer first or just use tinted moisturizer as the moisturizer?

Honestly bb creams r rubbish I've tried 3 different ones & it makes ur skin look like ash, in fact for halloween this year I used a bb cream on my bf's face to make him look ghostly for a fancy dress party! too thick, cakey & ashy & looks horrificly horrific in photos especially with flash! Xxx

Thank you for an honest review! I think as far as tinted moisturizers go, they are all about similar...at least the idea is. You look great!!

Laura, I've got to say that I was terribly disappointed with Laura Mercier's tinted moisturizer. I have both Sand and Nude, and while it's okay, it's surely nothing to rave about. I seem to be alone in my opinion. I love the LM brand for other reasons. I'll just have to look elsewhere for a tinted moisturizer.

Laura, I have to say that it did absolutely nothing for your skin. What a waste...It made you look washed out and such.

I just love tinted moisturizers. I got the Oil Free Laura Mercier one in Porcelain and I think is great. I live in Brazil and a product like Studio Fix Fluid for instance would be imposible to work with here. I sometimes wear a very light wait foundation, the Mac Face and Body, but I prefer the coverege and the feel of my Tinted Moisturizer. Just pair it with my Studio Finish Concelear and I'm ready to go.

Have you tried Hourglass tinted moisturizer- it is the best! So like a foundation... You can get it at Sephora in the states...

I really want to try this Terry tinted moisturiser, but it is the price that puts me back several steps, especially considering Terry products are even more over-priced in Australia.

I heard the dior one is pretty good. It seems to be a medium coverage but feels very light weight. you should try it!

i'm on the kiehls tm at the mo after reading the reviews on make up alley. i love it, it feels really nice on my skin especially as it doesnt go orangy like laura merciers and dior hydraction (i also thought they were a lot greasier than the kiehls). i prefer the concept of tinted moisturiser - i dont like foundation as i dont like feeling like i'm masked in make up, but i agree they really work best if your skin is in good condition already.

@Amina - I seem to remember liking the kiehls too. i wish i hadn't left it at home in the UK - will get my mum to bring it out :) however i kind of like that mask :) haha

I never like using foundation everyday,but when it comes to look perfect I can not skip it ! :)) but I always wonder to have a great skin free of spots and dark circles and etc.. but till now nothing could do it for me..Laura! pls tell to me which kind of skincare with which special products helped you to achieve this flawless & beautifull skin..

Great review Laura! as usual!
Only thing i would say about this is that By Terry is a french brand, and the french, in particular, parisian women are huge on skincare rather than make up and so this probably gives them just the glow they want, paired with a little eyeliner and mascara, and a dab of blush i should imagine it would give a very chic look!!
Your skin looks gorgeous in those pics, i envy your tan! xx

tina_mbc said...

I can understand how it probably doesn't live up to the expectations, esp for its price, but I think you look great in those photos!
Very healthy and dewy, personally I wouldn't have thought you were wearing any makeup/tinted moisturizer and that's always a big plus in my opinion...! :)

Have you ever tried the Nivea tinted? :) i think it's pretty good.

I would really love to be the kind of girl whose skin can be satisfied with the kind of coverage that TMs offer, since there are plenty of days where I would prefer a less than heavy coverage. I came up a solution of mixing my normal MAC mineralized liquid foundation with my moisturizers, adjusting the parts by what I want for that day. Works well, but not the best. Alas...

You look absolutely stunning in these photos!

Unfortunately I've never got on with tinted moisturisers - my skin has never been good enough to go without foundation. Shame!

fordgredial said...

Hey Laura,

Have you tried the oil-free version of Laura Mercier t.moisturiser? It is much more like a light coverage foundation than a t.m and has staying power (although I did tend to use primer under it).
