This place is huge!

I am in the company apartment until next week.

It's a massive three bed affair - with maids room and about 5 bathrooms. For one person, it's a little cavernous.

Have you noticed how much my voice echoes in my recent videos? There is a distinct lack of furniture or life to soak up any human sound.

This is the living/dining area (balcony is behind me as I took this picture)

And this is the walkway from my bedroom to the kitchen...what an effort man! haha

I am moving to another apartment within the Marina area next week. It's a short term lease and I think I might try out another couple of areas before I settle down in one.

In the UAE the practice is to sign up for a 12 month lease and pay upfront for those 12 months. *Gulp* That's quite a financial commitment and I don't want to commit to anything before I am 100% certain about both my job (branding research by the way :) and also the area.

I need to take a lot more photos to share with you including:

* The beach - I haven't even been there yet: so much for my David Dickinson tan
* The Malls - yeah I have been to plenty of those :)
* The abandoned cars (think high end SUVs, Porsches etc..) that expats had to just leave on the streets when they lost their jobs (and couldn't meet their loan debts) after the economy crash.

Yep, like any location in the world, there are definitely two sides to the city.

Hope you are all well!

An amazing apartment but i think I would rattle around there after a while. Must be nice to have a walk in wardrobe room, a make-up room, a shoe room though ...i.e. 3 extra bedrooms!!

Glad you are getting on ok, good luck with the new apartment.

Emma :)x

I love reading about your adventures in Dubai- you are pretty spot on with the malls and excess:) It's a fun city except for the summers. I think you will like the Marina area- I used to live with my family in Wafi Towers and it was beautiful. Best of luck on the apt search!

My sister who works in London is also thinking about moving to Dubai for a possible job for 1 year. After hearing your experience thus far, I'm standing behind her to try it out and explore this city--it sounds like such a fun once-in-a-lifetime experience. Your apartment looks gorgeous, but you're right a little to big. :)

@Clearly Beautiful Blog - it is a great opportunity but she should really look into it first. If she is on a year contract, its extremely difficult to get out of it. If you leave early, you have to pay your employer back the costs of your visa etc...plus I thought London was a culture of hard work, here its really full on - the whole work hard, play hard cliche rings true. having said that you can make a lot of money and advance your career but make sure you know what you are getting into as employees are not as protected here as they are in other countries! HTH!

how does someone get into a branding research career? What kind of diploma would that require?

I think you have a great idea there. Get a feel for the city before you make a massive commitment. Would love to see more photos of the place. It looks amazing and would love to take a trip there. Good luck with everything, job and apartment wise.

Wow, quite the company apartment! Dubai is supposed to be a high end city though, which explains the abandoned Porsche's. That really just bows my mind. I actually didn't know their economy had tanked. But glad to know your settling in, and just wanted to ask, "How is the high end haircare going"?

Lucky you! I bet the rental for that flat costs a fortune!! 3BR!!!

About selecting a flat for yourself I agree.. don't tie up yourself with the 12 month lease unless you are really happy and sure with the location.. take everything into consideration like the traffic, the accessibility and etc.. it's really hard at first but that's how it is here in Dubai..

I'm so envious right now, hehe. My sis did this back around 03/04 and would wax lyrical about Dubai and its marinas, until she got a placement in Kuala Lumpur and after that it was all about KL.
I didn't mind much as I was getting an endless stream of high-end makeup/perfumes and a designer handbag too. ;)

Hey, your place looks great! I hope you're not feeling too lonely in there, good luck finding a place though!

You know what's funny, I remember last year one of my friends was telling me how people are abandoning their cars in UAE and leaving them in the street, etc. I remember thinking "that is such a load and so stupid! Why would anyone believe that!" and I didn't believe that. But now I do, and I feel dumb about it, HAHA.
Thanks for sharing though, I can't wait to see more of your photos esp. since I'm middle eastern :)
XOXO

wow, i can't believe you're staying there by yourself. does it get a bit scary?

ooh i would love to see those abandon cars.. sounds interesting. here in the U.S. they do that with their boats and yachts since maintenance fees are ridiculous and for other money reasons..

The mall with the indoor skiing cracked me up. It was too surreal to stare at people skiing in a mall - in the middle of the desert.

Hi Laura, Im sure this has been asked a million times, but just wondering if your boyfriend moved with you? Or I think you mentioned before he travels around with his work too
