The phases we go through

Dubai is a hot country. Right now the weather is considered to be pleasant and mild. It's 35 degrees celsius and if you were a tanorexic you would be in heaven.

The problem is that I am going through something of a phase. I think this is spurred on from the fact that I have seen numerous examples of leathered and sunburnt skin around here recently.

In the UK I wanted to have the skintone of a Khardashian. Here, I am wanting to preserve my skin as much as possible. It's a classic case of always wanting what seems slightly unobtainable.

I think this change of heart may have been spurred on by both the sighting of the lobster red tourists in combination of the posting of this picture, on Mario Dedivanovic's blog.

How gorgeous is this look?

I love the hair, the makeup and the skintone.

No leather skin on her!

It is the singer Jaydn Maria and you can read all about her look, and others on Mario's amazing blog.

What celebrities or looks inspire you? Do you have an inspirational picture that you care to share?

I think it is fantastic that you have decided to preserve your skin, paler skin is gorgeous, it always takes a back seat to tanned looks, but some of the sexiest and most succesful and beatiful people have lighter toned skin, Dita Von Teese and Sophie Dahl anyone? On a serious note, it would be great if you could use your blog to promote skin safety to your army of followers. As a 23 year old brit who never worshipped the sun, I was diagnosed with an in situ melanoma last year. Why me? I thought, even though I never baked myself in the sun or on the sunbed and had been on very few holidays to hotter climes - then I came to realise, no reason really...It just happens to some people. Luckily I caught mine early and begged the doctors to take it out (they thought is was nothing to worry about - sometime they can be wrong). Now mu favourite beauty product is imy SPF30. So I will forever stay pale, non-leathery and more importantly, ALIVE. Girls, slap on that sunscreen and rock the pale look. The tan is dead! x

I agree. Pale healthy skin is the best. I don't at all like the look of "being pickled in the self tan bottle" either. Have there actually been any studies show that the long term use of self tanning creams is risk free?

I always moan about my pale skin, but i always think in the end it's a good thing, it matches my redish toned brown hair and my brown eyes. I also (hope) i won't end up with leather skin and alot of wrinkles! Fake tan is alright but can get messy and come off in patches, so i stick with my pale skin! xx

Its human nature laura..we'l always be unhappy or complaining for some reason or the other hehe..
I always drool for longer hair but can never reach the lenght i want as I have way too many splitends which are eventually chopped off :(
But I will reach that lenght some day :D

I find this picture inspirational, its very simple but I am in love with Deepika's caramel skin tone and how simply she looks elegant even with minimal makeup!

wow she's gorgeous!! loveee that photo and the hair and the makeup, wow! =) so happy that you share this.

i'm neither too pale, neither too dark, but sort of in the medium beige shade (NC30) and it's been recently that i really care about not tanning/darkening too much and i don't want to get sunburn, so i've started putting sunscreen on my face everyday (because i'm exposed to the sun a lot during the day) and i think it has helped reduced my skin to darken too fast! i tan way too quickly, really.

end note: love the look!
and @ shifa, i like deepika too! =)

You are who you are. I am pale skin and dark hair. Yes sometimes I want to look 'healthy' but not to the extent that I damage and harm myself. Also I'd look stupid with a dark tan!

There are many beautiful pale people, just look at the Corrs sisters.

I have my Johnson's holiday skin, terracotta teinte dore (Guerlian) and a few bronzers... and lots of SPF moisturisers and creams. That will do me fine. I hope I havent damgaed my skin too much so far.

Stand out fromt he crowd. Be pale :). Lots of people look up to you, so thank you for supporting us pale-ists!!

I pretty much find myself in the same situation. It's October and still 35 degrees here and I long for my pale winter days. Back in London I would tan as much as I could, here I am staying out of the sun. I clearly don't get my past obsession. Why would I want wrinkly peeling skin? Isn't the grass always greener on the other side? xx

dubai temperature gets crazy in summer...wearing a lipgloss and liner was the only make-up i sud do whn i was stationed there,,,
Skin does gets burned...because the tanning is ALWAYSuneven (if that makes sense). Sun burn is the result. pls take care of ur skin....

I hear ya! Before I moved to Australia I wanted to be nice and tan but now that I've been here 2 years (and 2 summers with 43C heat waves) all I want it to stay pale, unburned, and wrinkle free! (Though I do love a good St. Tropez tan!)

Some people actually ask me, why are you so pale? (Even though I'm not THAT FAIR.) I just have to bite my tongue and keep from saying, "Why are you so OLD LOOKING at 25?" etc.

Anyway, let us know how your possible quest to stay sun safe goes! Some days I really want to wear a burka here to keep sun safe... it's almost impossible to not get a burn even with sunscreen all over in these kinds of climates.

And yes, I have resorted to buying a cute sun parasol that I carry around (with all the Asian ladies!) in the summertime.

This is a stunning look. She looks amazing.
I tend to fake tan once every two weeks or when I'm feeling really pale. I have Scottish skin so I have no choice but to be happy pale. There's so many orange girls on the street that it's enough to put anyone off.

I think pale skin is beautiful, hello Dita von Teese! <3

I prefer pale and interesting to... interestingly streaky haha. I stopped using fake tanners over a year ago and have fully embraced my real skin tone. It's great having a tan in summer/after a holiday.. but once it fades, it fades..
Aslong as you are using a high spf sun cream and tanning naturally then let your golden goddess shine I say! xox

first of all congrats to not being in Dubai during hot months! :)) and then:
I think everybody is beautiful in her/his natural skin color ..
I'm fair and personally I don't like to be tanned , also totally I don't like very fair or very dark skin tones (just my personal opinion! :) )
ps: you look like to this posted photo in some of your youtube videos , when you have long wavy hair and smoky eyes :) then cheers :))

out of my 21 years here on earth i have gone tanning for one month and one month only lol. and it is NOT easy for me to get a tan in the summer - embrace the paleness :)

i live in florida so its hott and humid here as well and if i can live in "the sunshine state" and not be burnt to a crisp so can you lol. trust me im so pale people dont believe i live in florids. its quite funny but true and its not that i cant tan i just dont make an effort to. dont worry just moisturize alot and limit laying out intentionally to a minimum and voila gorgeous skin year round!! love you blog hun!!

I get really annoyed with my pale skin, it's too hard to find a foundation for and it shows up any blemishes or dark circles really badly. But at the same time I can't tan without burning first (which I have learned the hard way) and can't be bothered with fake tan half the time so I don't know what to do really

This is an interesting topic as I am mixed race (and have lived in each country my parents originate from) I have observed the different attitudes towards skin colour and what is considered desirable.

In Asia they like light skin as to them it represents youth (think baby skin) and wealth (as it appears you don't have to work outdoors for a living).

Whereas in the UK the popular look is to be tanned to give the impression of health (and maybe wealth since it looks like you can afford to holiday somewhere tropical).

Seems like the general consensus is that in a place where it's so easy to look like everyone else i.e. dark due to lots of sun exposure, or pale because of lack of then some aspire to look a little different from what is the norm in their country.

The celeb(s) I look to for make up/colouring inspiration are the models from victoria secrets :) I love their make up, and the whole brazilian look, although I identify more with the Kardashian colouring as I have dark hair and olive skin.

Whoops, sorry long post! x

I love that look too, goes to show you dont have to have a tan to be attractive :) I'm quite new to blogging but your Youtube tutorials seem to be very popular, cant wait to check them out!! xxx

Her make-up is fab!!! And i too wish i could do my make-up like a Kardashian :o( Although im not a huge fan of her, i like Rhianna's make-up looks!

For a mixed race girl, im actually one of the 'pale' ones if that makes any sense, i use fake tan on my legs for a golden look and LOVE getting tans on holiday! Sounds wierd but its true, and im not the only one hehe x

I don't know.. I think some people can pull off looking pale, and some, like ME, can't. I look sickly, especially now that I have black hair.
I mean, the girl on the photo is gorgeous with that combo, it works for her.. but I on the other hand, do not look healthy unless I have a bit of a tan.
I wish I didn't need it, but it is what it is.
It just all depends on what works best on you.

I think if your skin is meant to be pale, it looks better unless it has tannned on it's own, otherwise it looks too fake. Lovely pic, don't normaly like nude lips but here I do. My blogs full of images that inspire me hair and makeup wise. :)

Tan is dead for me since 16 because someone said to me that I looked twice my age... It freaks me out and since then, I'm a NW20 and proud of it !

I'm trying to have this haircut (in a black version) of Agyness in this picture :

I've just recently began using a daily moisturizer with a spf of 30 on a daily basis, plus makeup with SPF. I'm 21 and I really hope I can make a difference now and preserve my skin. Like most posting, I have really pale skin that burns insanely easily. I'm looking to protect the rest of my body, with a body lotion with SPF, both UVA and UVB. I think Aveeno has one, because their facial moisturizers are great! Be careful, but enjoy the sun!

I am a Latina...and my friends have always told me that I have light skin even when I am tan. Well, actually once I tan, I am left that color foreverrr. lol. I don't seem to go back to a lighter shade. Except for that one time that I was a camp counselor and spent 99% of the day outside. I think I was probably an NW40 then.

Right now is probably the lightest I have been in years NW25. But I've always liked pale skin over the OVERLY tan skin some girls sport. I seriously think tanning is an addiction. SOOO gross. Don't get me wrong I love a nice sun kissed glow on anybody, but when you start looking like an Oompa Loompa - thats trouble.

Hey laura. I think you should try IT cosmetics bye bye pores silk setting powder. Saw it on the shopping channel last night and remembered how you like wearing just a concealer in hot weather there and can use this as a transluscent setting powder. It's apparently powdered silk. I want to try it myself but i'm a makeup novice and am hoping you can do a review first :).

I found your youtube videos a few months back, and I want to let you know how much I love watching them. ...my makeup spending budget has swelled considerably!

As for the photo, she is gorgeous! The pale look is a hard one for me to pull off -- I have just enough Native American in me to where I tan extremely quickly. But I do love her look a ton.

that totally happened to me when I went to China this summer. The weather was hot and most of the girls there used umbrellas to preserve their fair skin. The fair-er the better. I'm a fair girl and I used to hate it. But I've realized beauty comes in all different colours. I had really light hair in the summer and have recently dyed it back to black. I love it! You can still have a healthy glow as a pale girl !!!

Here in Indonesia, girls want to have fairer skin. They even buy expensive pills for it.

My skin is naturally tan and I used to hate it. As I grew older I've come to realize that beauty comes in different colors.

I love your blog, I'm following now! :)
