A serious chop!

I mentioned before that I trimmed my extensions. I took to the scissors again but this time went for a slightly more dramatic cut.

I think this is the way forward with extensions. When you have shorter hair it is just too unrealistic to clip in 18 inches and expect it to look natural. It just wont because:

a) There is a huge disconnection between your natural hair length and the extension; and
b) Very few people have that length, and have it in such good condition, so people will look closely at your hair, and with more scrutiny comes more hassle in trying to ensure it looks both good and convincing.

My attack with the scissors has brought the extensions to about 8-10 inches. I wear four tracks, all positioned at the base and I never worry about how it looks - it's much easier to blend in.

Here is an idea of what we are dealing with here :) After a long day at work so forgive a slightly fatigued "looking down" pose :)

I am so much happier with them now. So yay!

Lessons learned

My advice is to grow your extensions with your hair. Keep it believable and once your own hair grows, feel free to add a few inches of bonus length with the help of a bit of fakery.

I agree, I heard someone on MTV call the disconnect between the hair extensions and the real hair 'and extension mullet' and not in a flattering way either lol!

lollipop26 said...

@Macalicious - haha "an extension mullet" :) i am using that :)

Agreed. I think it's so much easier to spot the fake-ness when you have short hair and super long extensions! It looks so much better when there is a smaller disparity in length between natural and fake. They look great! :)

I agree. It's a lot easier to spot extensions when your own hair is shorter. Your hair now looks very voluminous and thick! It's very pretty! Do you miss having longer hair though? I miss mine :( x

It looks great! You are completely right, when people have short bobs and clip in extensions down to their waist expecting to have natural flowing locks, it always ends up looking like an awful mullet.

The problem I have with extensions is that I like them to add volume, but my hair is so long now that even my 18 inch ones are too short... oh dear, time for a haircut!!

thanks laura!!! i have short hair as well and want extensions but was unsure b/c i had bonded ones before when my hair was short and like you said, they looked so unnatural so i was considering clipins but i was still scared soooo you have convinced me! lol. they look so good so i am going to bite the bullet and buy some, cut them, and see how it goes! lol

Great idea! Need to cut mine, although with my skills it'll be more like butchering! haha

Your hair looks great and the extensions are so natural looking!

The extensions look gorgeous! A friend of mine had just above shoulder length hair and put in extensions that were around 18 inches and it just looked awful. You could tell what was her real hair and what wasn't from twenty feet away. I think now I'll just force her to cut them to a more reasonable length instead of having her throw them out! Oh and your hair looks great curly by the way!

Looks very convincing! I've always found it really difficult to make extentions look real in shorter hair. You've cracked it! :)

I think you look more youthful with shorter hair without extension. Having said that you look good in anything.

Liz said...

Great idea!! Do you cut them WHILE they're in place, or do you cut while they're lying flat on a table or something..?
Thanks!

Very natural:) what eye makeup do you have on? :)

So true about people thinking your hair is fake if it's really long and decent looking. I can't tell you the amount of times I've heard people say as I pass by.. "wig.. " or "hair extensions".. I can understand hair extension comments (even though I didn't have them) but wig??? what the hell? My hair was probably about 20-22 inches long back then.
