Lush Ultra Bland

First of all I want to preface this by saying that I don't love everything that I have tried from Lush (no matter how hard I try I don't get the whole concept with buying lumps of soap (give me shower gel any day!) and I also hated the impossibly hard and scratchy green salt scrub for example) but I think this product might be a keeper.

I kept hearing people talk about this. First came Kerry1487 and then came an "in real life" friend Trudie - professional makeup artist and skincare specialist extraordinaire who highly recommended it.

The product is Lush's Ultra Bland cleanser and I think this stuff is magic!

The selling point for me, and the reason I tried it, was that everyone said it removed all makeup - including waterproof mascara.

My initial reaction is always to go "yeah, right" when I hear that. Few products do it better than baby oil - but then we know that the mineral oil in baby oil is not always great for the delicate eye area.

So I gave this a try and you know what? They were right. It even - get this! - removes my copious layers of mascara and that my friends, is quite a feat!

And how does it work? Its a light cream texture that you massage into your face and eye area. I smell honey as soon as I open my little pot and that is one of the ingredients included. After massaging it in, wet a cotton pad and then wipe. It's that simple. I often tone afterwards as well - trialling something by BeeLuscious at the moment and it does the job.

I have to say that I am really impressed with this. Now in a couple of weeks time I might break out and have to retract this post but to be honest I don't see how that can happen. It has a non-offensive ingredients list and the reviews I have seen say how it is good for people with sensitive, spotty-prone skin like myself. I am keeping my fingers crossed! :)

Has anyone else tried this? I want to know your experience - good or bad!

I have this, but i find it leaves my eyes a little blurry after use, and them smells makes me feel a little nauscious. Although, you're right, it gets rid of EVERYTHING & i actually like that you use a cotton pad to remove it. :)
I do have to say though that i much prefer "babyface" cleansing bar. Which has the same concept, except in a bar form.
I find it easier, smells nicer & does the same thing, and leaves my face feeling as soft as a babies bum :)

Ive been wanting to try this for a long while but it seemed rather expensive for a small pot. I might get a sample though :)

I absolutely hated this, I could probably be the only one though! I just really disliked the film it left on my face & the mess of it & my face just didn't feel clean afterwards =(

Thanks for posting this! At the moment I'm using two different types of eye makeup remover to get rid of my waterproof Lash Blast, but even that is not working. I will definitely have to order some and try it out.

I got Lush Ultrabland with the Night in for Two deal. I really love it. I was using Ponds Cold Cream at night to remove the makeup and cleanse, but like you, was worried about the mineral oil even though my skin looked fine. The Lush Ultrabland does exactly the same thing but w/o the mineral oil which is lovely. I love that you don't need much at all and it gets the job done! I also like that it leaves my skin feeling hydrated, rather than acne cleansers and soaps that may leave the skin dry and tight. Soooo I totally agree with you. I have been using this for about two weeks with no negative reaction and I will repurchase the larger size! Thanks for the great reviews, I love your blog and videos :)

i totally agree that some of the stuff from Lush is quite weird! But this, on the other hand, sounds really nice! Might have to go try it :)

I'm a Lush virgin but the thought of being able to remove waterproof mascara is very enticing indeed! :)

Might go and give this a try. I rarely use anything but Bath Bombs from Lush. I just use Johnson's Clean and Clear Exfoliating Scrub to get off all my make-up in the shower. Is that too harsh for the skin? Seems to do the job for me.

I may this!
I tried baby oil when you said about it but i couldn't see for about an hour afterwards :( I didn't realise I had such sensitive eyes which is not good with the amount of make up I put on my eyes!

Sounds good! I massage Simple cleanser into my skin and onto my eye area in a similar way and wipe off with a baby wipe, it's the best method I've ever used! All my eye makeup is removed so easily, no scrubbing at it anymore! xx

I might have to try this, how much is it in the UK?

I really didn't like this product - loved the idea (& the smell) but even with a wet cotton pad or washcloth & warm water my skin never felt like I'd removed it all properly.

For an all-in-one makeup remover & cleanser I much prefer Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish or a wash off cleansing oil such as L'Occitane Almond & Apple.

I used this for about a year. I really loved it (especially the smell) but then stopped using it just because i consider having to use water too much hassle. It is a great product, but in reality I want something that comes straight from a bottle, without having to be near a sink. yes i'm lazy! x

Hi Laura,

I'm a long time reader of your blog and must say that I find your posts and opinions on products really helpful!

Re: removing eye makeup with baby oil: according to my dermatologist this isn't a good idea at all, as the skin around the eyes is far too sensitive to happily deal with any form of heavy oil. In fact, one facialist told me that applying a lot of oil around the eyes can cause really bad eye bags -- yikes!

I haven't tried Ultra Bland but I will check it out next time I'm in a LUSH store. At the moment I'm using an eye makeup remover from La Roche Posay (blue coloured bottle, clear liquid) and am quite pleased with it. I don't wear much eye makeup (only a bit of kohl eyeliner and regular mascara, not waterproof) but have fairly sensitive eyes and I like my makeup removers to be gentle yet super effective -- this one does the job.

cheerio,

Nadine.

This is my holy grail product!!! Been using it for a couple of years now and my skin is the best its ever been. It is important to make sure you remove all the product, as sometimes I find I miss bits on my jaw line and this can cause breakouts, but to avoid this I often follow ultrabland with a wipe over of Lush's Tea Tree toner on a cotton pad, which removes any excess. Hope it works for you!! xxx

Check out one of my old posts on ultra bland. I've been using it for three years and I like it, its definitely not for everyone though as it can be a lil greasy.

Can I ask about the fragrance of this product?

I like a few things from Lush, but almost all the products have such a strong fragrance that I think it is too much for me. Is this one ok?

does this product smell nice? cause usually i find lush products are little too herb-y or like... i dunno how to describe it.. like really potent natural smelling kind of thing.. haha

i use the estee lauder take it away make up remover and it is seriously a gem, it removes EVERYTHING and doesn't leave a greasy film :D

You should try Rimmels oil-free makeup remover..it feels like water but it removes everything..even waterproof LashBlast (my fave)and your eyes aren't blurry after and there is no residue...it is so gentle..it is my HG makeup remover.

I've heard a lot about this so really want to try it. The Lush in Leeds has closed for a while (they're putting a spa in, amaze!) but when it opens I'm going to give it a try xx

I use to use this religiously in my teenage years back when it came in glass pots.
I loved it as it was cheap and removed my waterproof polish.
If you want to test it's true effectiveness, use your normal cleanser then try this afterwards and check out the cotton pad results!

Yes I also heard baby oil can be bad for eyes, but I like the babyface bar from Lush, used with cotton wool, my make up slides off, and it's only £4 (ish) :)

wow. i will have to try this out. It sounds good. By the way, have you checked out color craft collection? I'd like to hear your haul and review.

Going to the shop completely puts me off the products because the smell is overwhelming! I'm sure I'd like things if I actually brought them but I struggle with the shop!!

I've been using the Ultra Bland for about a month or more now and I absolutely love it. It takes off all my makeup, no matter how many layers of eye makeup I have applied and It leaves my skin feeling better. I don't know if it is just because I like the product so much, but I've noticed my skin getting better and not having as many breakouts, only one spot every now and again. Definitely recommend it! :)

This is my favourite must-have product of all time. I don't think I could live without Ultrabland! When I worked at LUSH our trainer used to say that if we sold this to a customer and within two weeks it didn't clear up acne that we would refund them straight away. Never happened as this is such a miracle product. Glad you found it!

i do like ultra bland however you should try babyface if you havent already. I think it works even better on eye makeup then ultra bland but its not as convenient if you travel..
they are both made up of cocoa butter so be careful as its extremely pore blocking!

i use this most nights! i wear quite alot of mascara/liquid liner & revlon colorstay foundation. its usually soo hard to get off but with this its easy & gentle, i put dabs of it all over my face and jawline and massage it for about 5 minutes (this is when i do my daily facial massage to keep it toned!) and even rub it over my eyes (doesnt sting!) then wipe of with warm cotton pads, then the last cotton pad spritzed with toner & apply a LUSH moisturiser. leaves my face so clean, glowy & smooth! (i use babyface too its the same concept but smells lovely, is slightly less heavy and is a cute solid bar!) x
